Spring Reflection

I do understand my college education even more throughout my learning. It’s about learning about new things. It had been more stressed in very last weeks of quarter. It is not as much fun as it was in high school, but it is worth it. College education is for everyone. Everybody should have a good education in order to get a good job.

I think I have improved on my time management. It used to be the way that I did an assignment very last minute before it was due. The quality of work was poor. I found a lot of silly mistakes when I looked back at them. I was pretty upset about it because the quality of work would be better if I spent more time on it. Now, I have learned that I should start assignments as early as possible. Therefore, I can have time to go back and work on it. It won’t be a lot of stress for me if I divide an assignment into small chunks and build them up.

Attending a public meeting was meaningful and surprisingly interesting. I think it would be something I would not do by myself. I have never been a person to go out in public and do things. This assignment gave me an opportunity and a lesson that everything is not as bad as I think. I had done a lot of things in this class that I thought were really hard and uncomfortable to me such as going to places to do a field assignment. All of them were not bad at all. It was great opportunity and I become to like it during the term because it gives me an opportunity to explore a bigger Portland.

What surprised me was I survived in political topic. Politics were always something I never thought I would understand. Now, I gain more knowledge about it. It made me realize about many things around me that interestingly are related to politics. I had a lecture about homeless people in this class. There were many surprise facts about them such as most of them were not mentally ill, people could go homeless only from they were not willing to work or they did not have enough money in their savings account. Oregon is also the state that did not have rent control, which this affects a majority of college students.

I was expecting my writing would get better than it was before the beginning of the term. I had a lot of writing to do this term and I could see the improvement myself. I think when I do writing every week keep me improving throughout the term. I had learned a lot about Portland in history, geography, economic, and politics.

This term was different from Fall and Winter term. In Fall and Winter, I was assigned to write a reading response every week, and a field assignment every couple weeks before. However, in Spring term, they both were together in one piece of writing every week with a thousand-word essay. I found myself be able to write a longer paper better than I did before. It didn’t take me as long as it took in the beginning of the year. It was very hard for me to get used to this kind of assignment because it was a big chunk every week. However, I was happier with the work I did in this term than Fall and Winter term. I like doing one big assignment every week better than small pieces throughout the week. This way, I can focus on one thing that I need to get it done with better quality of work.

I got a lot of new knowledge in guest lectures. The writing assignments were pretty interesting this term. They didn’t involve of researching time since I could use an information from lectures. The assignments were meaningful to me because there were things that I could see and were close on my daliy basis. We went to City Hall on a field trip, which was new to this quarter. It made this class even more interesting since we didn’t have it in the other two terms. A mentor session helped me save a lot of time. It was very helpful how most parts of assignments could be done if I used the time wisely.

I could improve on being on time with assignments as a student. I have a planner, but I did not really use it. I think the planner is a great tool for students to have since it keeps me organized and be on time. I am a person that easily forgets. The planner guides me on what I should be working on everyday. This would be one of the ways I can improve as a student. The writing center helps me a lot too since English is not my first language. They suggested to me what I should be focusing on because I often did not cover all the topics I should write about.
